Tell us about you

I started out when I was 8 years old when my friend’s mum bought me a small drum set so I could accompany him as he played his new guitar. We formed a band and never looked back. Decades later both he and I would be performing together in Moscow Dynamo Stadium to 18,000 people. But my first pro job at 20 came after answering an ad in Melody Maker for a singing bass player for a Scandinavian tour. I haven’t stopped working since.

Kev Moore 1What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer?

It’s hard to imagine being anything other than a musician but the two other things I do to a lesser extent are creative artwork and writing.

As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence?

Hands down my biggest influence has been Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple, but also Jess Roden (look him up) Phil Lynott, Alan Lancaster and Burke Shelley from Budgie. The only one I never met was Alan. I’m proud to say the first two are now friends.

Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright?

I can’t really say I get nervous. The stage is my natural habitat. I remember one gig though many years ago - it was the biggest venue I’d played at the time - Ipswich Gaumont - and the lights went down and I happened to see all the other people staring down from the circle … that was a ‘gulp’ moment!

What was your best moment?

My best moment … it’s one of three - playing CBGB’s in New York, Playing Moscow Dynamo stadium , or playing a tiny venue in the Highlands with Saxon - 200 hundred metal fans in your face and the sweat running down the walls !

What has been your worst moment?

My worst moment was a local gig here in Spain doing a solo show and the mini disc providing the backing started skipping ! I had to keep jumping around on my bass and vocal to stay with the track. What a nightmare! That’s why I love playing LIVE with a band. If you get in a hole, you can usually dig yourself out of it!

Many voices of Andrew Marc

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business?

It’s a piece of advice my old bandmate and writer of Yellow River - Jeff Christie - gave me - ‘Stay on the bus’. By that he meant , don’t give up, keep going because, you may not make it, but if you get off the bus, you definitely won’t .

Any little anecdotes or interesting stories?

I have so many anecdotes it’s hard to pick one! But this one stands out:

While touring Russia: We were in Red Square and saw John Major .. he was on a book tour. The following day we were on a rickety old Aeroflot flight to St Petersburg. John Major’s sat up front, there’s us (Christie) T. Rex, Smokie, Slade and Mungo Jerry on the plane. It’s a blizzard outside and the plane is bouncing around and the seat tray has just come off in my hands. I’m sat next to Dave Hill, Slade’s flamboyant guitarist when he turns to me and says, pointing at our ex PM in his inimitable Black Country drawl: “If this plane goes down we’ll all be front page news tomorrow!”

Not now Dave, not now! 🤣
